William Hammons age 84, of Clinchco, Virginia passed away October 18, 2018 at his home following a lengthy illness.  William was a three-year Veteran of the United States Army and spent most of that time serving as a lineman in Austria. After serving in the Army he worked some in welding, then mining for several years while he and his wife established a grocery store business which became his career until retirement. William was a quiet, independent and hardworking man.  He devoted his life to working to take care of his family.

William was preceded in death by his parents, Calvin and Myrtle Stanley Hammons and his wife of sixty-three years, Edith Counts Hammons; his brothers, Hobart, Elmer and Carroll Hammons; his sister, Cora Faye Hammons; sons-in-law, Charles Ralph Wallace and Wilson Allen Anderson; grandson, Nathan Lane Anderson.

Survivors include daughters, Linda (Garnie) Sykes, Brenda (Larry French) Anderson, Donna Wallace; his son, Benny Ray Hammons; grandsons, Jordan Will Anderson and Shane (Nina) Sykes; great granddaughters, Hannah and Kerri Rasnake; his brother, Palmer Hammons; sisters, Norma Sue Hammons and Lavada Kay Hammons (Charlie Quinlan); sisters-in-law, Ocie, Thelma and Roxie Hammons; several nieces and nephews.

Bobby Hammons was a special nephew who would come to visit when he could and share conversation on classic cars and such and when William was able take him for a ride or to his home to see what he was working on.  Mitchell Hammons was another special nephew who came to visit when he could.

We want to extend a special "Thank You" to Mickey Taylor for his friendship over many years and for coming to give Dad a haircut at home.

We are grateful to have had a father that devoted his life to providing for his family.  We will remember him with love.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 21st at 1 PM in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow at the Nathan Edwards Cemetery with family and friends serving as pallbearers.  Visitation will begin at Noon.
