Virginia Ruth Rakes, age 101, went home to be with the Lord Thursday - July 16, 2009 at Wexford House in Kingsport, TN. Ruth was born September 5, 1907 in Dickenson County, VA, a daughter of C.B. and Vadna Sutherland Edwards. She had lived in Clintwood for the past 30 years. Mrs. Rakes was a member of Solid Rock Old Regular Baptist Church, having joined August 29, 1939, where she faithfully attended as long as she was able. She was also a member of the Clintwood Senior Citizens. Mrs. Rakes enjoyed doing hand work, sewing, quilting, crocheting and tending to her flowers. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, W. Bertie Rakes, whom she married June 19, 1924. She was also preceded by three sisters, one brother and two infant sons. Mrs. Rakes is survived by five daughters: Irene Counts, Lizella, GA, Mildred (Bill) Mullins, Glade Spring, VA, Gaynelle McCoy, Clintwood, Anita (Dr. Bruce) Adkins, Gate City, VA and Loraine Triplett of Bristol, VA. Twelve grandchildren survive: Ralph (Shirley) Farmer, Jerry (Margie) Farmer, Lola Light, Richard (Rosie) Mullins, Bonnie (Jack) Andrews, Myron (Charlotte) McCoy, Pat (Mike) Hanback, Brian (Gaye) McCoy, Dr. Steve (Connie) Adkins, Andrea (Ron) Shepherd, Jennifer (Richard) Bragg, and Kevin (Jill) Triplett. 19 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren also survive as well as special care givers Remona Clay and Rocio McDavid. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. on Saturday - July 18, 2009 at Clintwood Funeral Home where a memorial service will follow at 7:00. Funeral services will be Sunday - July 19, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Elders Jimmy Dale Sanders and Eddie Newsome officiating. Burial will be in the Rakes Family Cemetery located on Mullins Ridge. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be grand-sons-in-law and great-grandsons. Mrs. Rakes and her family are in the care of Clintwood Funeral Home, Clintwood, VA.
