Obituary

Tolby Mooney, age 86, died at Johnson City Medical Center, after a brief illness. Born in Dickenson County, VA he was the son of George and Ethel Mooney, who preceded him in death along with wife's Nell Artrip Mooney and Agnes Grizzle Mooney; and several brothers and sisters. Tolby was a Chef at the CC Camp in Clintwood, a veteran of WWII, US Army, member of Big Red One First Infantry Division. Tolby was injured on D-Day and received a Purple Heart, and received honors from France. He was a member of VFW Post 9600, Pound, a volunteer at Dickenson County Medical Center, and sang with the Spiritual Family Singers, Valley View Freewill Baptist Church, and a faithful supporter of Foxtown Community Church. Surviving are his sons, Edmund Mooney, Jr. (Pee Wee) and wife Paula, Clintwood; Clyde Lee Mooney, Clintwood, and Larry Mooney and wife Cheryl, Louisville, KY; Step-son Worley Grizzle, and wife Susan, of NC; two daughters, Patsy Priddy and husband Billy, Richmond, VA and Jo Ann Williams and husband Charlie, of Raonoke, VA; one brother, Amos Mooney and wife Betty, of Kentucky, June Lilly, Cleveland, OH, Maggie Lee Vanover, and Ruth Lilly, Clintwood; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Tolby was a strong, independent, hard-working man and lived in his own home until his recent illness. He never met a stranger and always considered everyone a friend. Tolby loved to cook and was famous for his biscuits, chicken and dumplings and stack-cake. He was loved by his family and will be missed by all. The family will receive friends at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel after 6:00 PM Thursday, July 24, 2008, with a song service to follow at 7:00 PM. Officiating ministers will be Lynn Vanover and Lester Mullins. A graveside service will be conducted at Phipps Memorial Cemetery at 11:00 AM Friday, July 25, 2008, with military ceremonies conducted by VFW Post 9600 of Pound. VFW post 9600 will also serve as pallbearers. Those wishing to follow in procession to the cemetery are ask to meet at the Clintwood Funeral Home by 10:45 AM Friday.
