ROSE ELLA SUTHERLAND passed away on November 12, 2017 at the age of 74. Rose's ashes will be laid to rest with her parents in Clintwood on July 13, 2018.

Rose grew up in Clintwood and was the daughter of the late Irene and Mayno Sutherland. After growing up with the cast of characters created by her father's "Tales of the Tall Timbers" column published in The Dickensonian for many years, Rose had a deep appreciation and love of the diverse culture and history of the Cumberland Mountains.

After graduating from Clintwood High School, Rose attended the College of William and Mary and, after graduation, taught school in Virginia Beach. She received a Master's Degree in Special Education from Old Dominion University. Rose spent 32 years with the Department of Defense Education Agency Overseas Schools stationed in Germany, where she served as a Special Education Diagnostician before becoming a Special Education Coordinator.

In 2008, after traveling the world, Rose returned to Va. Beach to enjoy retirement with her family, friends and a tiny Yorkie known as the Duchess of Sutherland.

A celebration of life graveside service will take place at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on July 13, 2018.
