Obituary

Roger Orbin Powers passed away at Johnson City Medical Center on June 13th, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.   Roger was born on May 27th, 1952, to the late Hudson Powers and Onnie Sturgill Cassell.

Roger was a 1971 graduate of Clintwood High School.  He was a lifelong coal miner and truck driver, CB handle "Bootsie", who made many friends over the course of his career.  Roger was an avid fisherman who enjoyed spending time on the lake with friends and family and, although he was generally quiet, he would squeal with delight when he had a fish on the hook.   When not on the lake, he loved to watch any form of racing, and was particularly a fan of NASCAR and Chevrolet race cars.  He also loved to fly remote controlled airplanes and helicopters in his spare time.  Roger was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and brother.  He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, taking them on "adventures", and going to their ballgames and recitals.  Roger enjoyed family get togethers and he particularly loved family dinners.  Roger was the best "Papaw" and we all "sure did love him."

Roger is preceded in death by his father Hudson Powers, his stepfather Cecil Cassell, and his mother Onnie Sturgill Cassell.  He is survived by his wife Audrey Powers of Pound, VA, three sons:  Steven Powers and wife Teresa of Clintwood, VA; Stephen Stanley and wife Jennifer of Kingsport, TN and Lee Sturgill and wife Elizabeth of Kingsport, TN;  one sister: MaryAnn Kempen and husband Roger of Rutledge, TN; eight grandchildren: Matthew Stanley and wife Savannah of Murfreesboro, TN; Madisyn Harkleroad and husband Chad of Bean Station, TN; Greyson Chester and partner Cassie Fields of Gate City, VA; Mason Stanley of Pound, VA; Drew Emmette of Kingsport, TN; Jaxon Sturgill of Kingsport, TN; Ethan Johnson of Kingsport, TN and Ellis Sturgill of Kingsport, TN:  two great-grandchildren: Sammy Chester and Sawyer Fields of Gate City, VA:  one nephew: Larry Barton and wife Amber of Clintwood, VA and one niece: LeAnn Hill and husband Charles of Clintwood, VA.

Pallbearers will be Gary Mullins, Larry Barton, Charles Hill, Cannon Hill, Collin Hill, Jaxon Sturgill, Mason Stanley and Greyson Chester.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Joey Rose, Roger Kempen, Billy Sowards, Drew Emmette and Chad Harkleroad.
