Dr. N.C. Ratliffe passed away August 5, 2012 in Knoxville, Tennessee at Parkwest Medical Center. He was born January 30, 1926, the son of the late Clyde Willis Ratliffe and Agnes Sutherland Gilliam. He was also preceded in death by his wife of fifty seven and half years, Mable "Polly" Clear Ratliffe, daughter, Jennifer Lee Ratliffe, brother, John Robert Gilliam and sister, Mary Ruth Bise. Dr. Ratliffe was a life long resident of Clintwood, Virginia. He practiced medicine for fifty eight and half years at the Sutherland Clinic in Clintwood before he retired for health reasons in July 2012. During his practice he served as County Medical Examiner and conducted the Pre-Natal Clinic at the Dickenson County Health Department. He was a member of the American Medical Association and The Southern Medical Association. Dr. Ratliffe was a 1953 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia. He was a 1942 graduate of Dickenson Memorial High School and graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in science. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1943, attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and served during World War II with the 78th Infantry Regiment in France and Berlin. Dr. Ratliffe passions were his family, his medical practice, reading, hunting, fishing and following sports. Dr. Ratliffe is survived by a son, Norman Willis Ratliffe of Clintwood, Virginia; his daughter, Rebecca Scariano and her husband, Jack of Knoxville, Tennessee; granddaughter, Rachael Scariano, a student at University of Tennessee; grandsons, Jack Scariano, III, a student at Tusculum and Michael Scariano, a student at University of Tennessee, Chattanooga. He is also survived by his sister, Louella G. Blair of Clintwood and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 8, 2012, 7:00 pm at Clintwood Baptist Church with Pastor Joe Glenn Sluss and Pastor Bryant Owens officiating. Family will receive friends Wednesday 5:00 pm at the church. A graveside service will begin 11:00 am Thursday morning at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery, Clintwood. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Don King, Harry Lee Strouth, Paul Mullins and Rex Baker.
