Mary Alice Rakes Gilley, 59 died April 13, 2008 at Care Partners Hospice in Asheville, NC. She was born in Clintwood, Virginia and was the daughter of the late Elder Alex T. Rakes and Lou Verna Colley Rakes. She was the youngest of nine children and was preceded in death by two brothers, James Carl and Clinton Rakes, and two sisters, Mazalee Charles and Estelene Deel. She was a member of Solid Rock Old Regular Baptist Church. Mary was a graduate of Clintwood High School and Clinch Valley College. She was an accomplished artist and taught art in the public high schools in Wise, Virginia and Asheville, NC. She is survived by her husband, Jerry D. Gilley and two daughters, Emily Rachel Gilley and Susannah Gaines; one brother, Harold Rakes; and three sisters, Bernice Fleming, Ruby Vanover and Linda Keene. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Clintwood Funeral Chapel with Elders Danny Yates, David O'Quinn, and Eddie Newsome officiating. Burial will follow at the Rakes Family Cemetery on Mullins Ridge, The Lake Road, Clintwood, VA. The family will receive friends after 6:00 PM Wednesday, April 16, 2008 with services to follow at 7:00 PM.
