Obituary

August 14, 1949 – December 17, 2025

With heavy hearts, we honor the life of Larry Ray Combs, who passed away surrounded by the community and land he cherished deeply. Born to the late Frank and Zora Edwards Combs, Larry journeyed through life from his roots in Clintwood, Virginia, where he transformed hardship into strength and resilience.

Larry was known for his unyielding spirit, shaped by a life in the coal industry where he earned respect through sheer determination. He owned coal trucks and exemplified toughness, driving forward with independence and resolve. To those who knew him, he was more than his formidable presence; he was a loyal friend, a protector, and a man of unwavering principles.

Though he was known as tough and independent, Larry had a gentle side, especially with children, who instinctively recognized his kindness and patience. He held a deep passion for his farm, where he found solace and fulfillment. Throughout the years, he and his daughter took profound joy in showing horses, experiences that brought him not only cherished memories but lifelong friendships. Together with his beloved horses and his dog Bo, Larry found his joy in the simple and the steady.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents and brothers Jimmy, Ricky and Michael Combs.

Larry's legacy continues through his daughters, Hattie Sue Colley and Cindy Stidham (Toby), his grandchildren Amanda, Roger, Adran, and Trevor (Courtney), and his great-grandchildren Arabelle, Audrey, and Everlee. He also leaves behind his brother Roger Combs, stepfather Terry Massing, and a large extended family of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who enriched his journey.

This community was blessed by Larry's friendship and fortitude. Special friends who brightened his life include Randall Mullins, Paxton Mullins, Scott Long, Jon Brad Smith, Steve and Wilma McCoy, Julie Watts, Don Thompson, Gobel Ratliff, Jerry Blackwell, Tony Smith, Cassie Gayle, Belinda Livingston Rose, Earl Perry, Seth Baker and Andrew Burden.

Larry Ray Combs will be remembered as a man who stood firmly, loved deeply, and lived authentically. As we gather to celebrate his life, we honor the indelible mark he left on the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services for Larry Ray Combs will be held 3 PM Saturday December 20, 2025, at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Steve McCoy officiating. The family will receive friends from 2 PM till service time.
