Obituary

Lacy Milam Fleming of Clintwood, Virginia died on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the age of 77 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ayers Fleming and Flossie Baker Fleming. Also his sister Bula Fleming, brothers Joseph Fleming, Ivel Fleming, Stacy Fleming and Ayers Fleming Jr. He is survived by his sister Launa Smith of Baltimore, Maryland, and his son Stephen Fleming and his wife Donna of Hughesville, Maryland, his son Joseph Fleming and his wife Linda of Crofton, Maryland and daughter Julie Drenning and her husband Bill Drenning of Severn, Maryland. Also surviving are his 5 grandchildren Stephen, Lauren, Christopher, Austin and Holly Fleming. Also surviving are his first wife Betty Fleming Stepp of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and his second wife Pauline Fleming of Clintwood, Virginia and many other extended family members. Mr. Fleming was born in Clintwood Virginia on April 4, 1932. He graduated from Clintwood High School in 1954. Upon his graduation, he moved to Washington D.C. to pursue his career goals. Initially he worked for the House of Representatives, and then the Library of Congress. Later, he worked as a senior compositor for many years at the National Academy of Science preparing various research documents in preparation for study and publishing. This was his favorite occupation and he was commended for his speed at document preparation. Upon retiring from this organization in 1981, Mr. Fleming relocated to his hometown of Clintwood and also worked for various local establishments in the following years. Mr. Fleming was married to his first wife in 1957 and raised his first family in the state of Maryland. He was very active in the churches that the family attended as a member of the choir, piano player, Sunday School teacher and deacon of the church. He also began a second career as a piano teacher for many students which he enjoyed doing for several years. He gave special attention to his students and conducted many recitals and competitions which were always well attended. After returning to Clintwood and marrying his second wife in 1983, he spent many good years with his second family. He also continued to faithfully attend church. His last several years were spent as a member of the Clintwood Baptist Church, singing in the choir and playing the piano. He also enjoyed taking trips to visit his children and grand-children back in Maryland who he loved greatly and was very proud of. Family will receive friends at a viewing and visitation time scheduled for Friday, March 26th from 7 pm - 9 pm at the Clintwood-Colley Funeral Home with the funeral service to be held at the Clintwood Baptist Church on Saturday, March 27 at 2 pm. Burial will follow at the Colley Cemetery located on the Lake Rd. Clintwood. Pallbearers will be Deacons of the Church.
