Johnnie Hershal French, age 70, passed away Thursday, October 23, 2014 at his home. Mr. French was a life long resident of Dickenson County, retired from Duke Energy and a member of Old Maple Grove Church of Sandy Ridge. He was a founding member of the Sandy Ridge Rescue Squad and a member of the Ervinton Athletic Booster Club. Mr. French was preceded in death by his parents, Maynard and Snoda French and his sister, Dollie Mae French. Survivors include his wife Madeline Smith French of McClure; son Johnnie Hershel French, II and wife Georgia of Portland Oregon; two daughters, Lena Whisenhunt and husband Delmer , Tonya Mullins and husband Maris, all of McClure; two brothers, Arnold French and wife Nancy, James French and wife Shirley all of McClure; one sister, Carrie Ganzman and husband Alan of Lenoir City, Tennessee; eight grandchildren, Brittany Whisenhunt, Dustin Whisenhunt, Hannah Phelps, Denver Mullins, Riley Yates, Kolton French, Penelope French and Baby Bear on the way; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, October 26th, 11:00 am at the Old Maple Grove Church with Les Ritchie and Garry Blevins officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Place Cemetery, McClure. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Saturday, October 25th at the church beginning at 6:00 pm, services will follow at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be sent to the Old Maple Grove building fund, 6478 Dr. Ralph Stanley Highway, Coeburn, Virginia 24230.
