Genoa Jean Fleming Salyers, born January 5, 1925 on Baker Ridge near Clintwood, Virginia. Daughter of Gilmer and Ida Baker Fleming. Departed this life November 11, 2015 making her stay on this earth 90 years. She married Fred V. Salyers January 20, 1943, and to this union was born three children; Fredrick Hugh, Judy Marie Branham, and Nancy Carol. Jean was a native of Dickenson County and spent most of her life there except for a short period of time in Northern Virginia and Columbus Georgia during World War II. Jean was an avid reader and walker. She was the author of several poems and a book titled "No Rest for the Wicked". In 1964, she surrendered her life to Jesus and took him as her personal savior, and was baptized in August of that year by Brother Derwood Yates and Brother Mack Mullins. She took membership at Rachel's Chapel Church in August, 1965. She enjoyed a wonderful fellowship with all the good brothers and sisters there. She later moved her membership to Valley View Freewill Baptist Church in Clintwood where she was a member of the choir. Jean attended Dickenson Memorial High School in the early forties and later studied and received a degree in interior decorating, and Emergency Medical Technician. She worked as an interior decorator for about a year. She was then employed by People's Department Store in Clintwood as a sales clerk where she worked for 12 years. She retired in 1988. Jean joined the auxiliary of Dickenson County Medical Center in 1988 and volunteered there for 15 years. She also served as Secretary and Treasurer for 10 years, and Vice President for two years in the Auxiliary. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Fred V. "Pug" Salyers; two daughters, Judy Marie Salyers Branham, and Nancy Carol Salyers; one son, Fredrick Hugh Salyers; four sisters, Annette McGuire, Leora Wright, Lake Helen Magee, and Darlene Yates; four brothers, Cecil Fleming, Jason Fleming, Earl Ray Fleming, and Roy Fleming. She is survived by one grandson, Shawn Blake Roberts of Clintwood, VA; three sisters, Estelle Stanley of Manassas, VA; Lucille Galeano of Reston, VA; and Vivian Gilmer of Myrtle Beach, SC, and a host of nieces nephews and friends. Funeral services for Jean Fleming Salyers will be conducted at 7:00 PM Friday, November 13, 2015 in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Lynn Vanover, and Lester Mullins officiating. Visitation will begin at 6:00 PM Friday until time of service. Graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM Saturday, November 14, 2015 at Phipps Memorial Cemetery Clintwood, VA.
