James Elmer (Sarge) Smith, age 83, of the Skeetrock Community died September 14, 2008 at the Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. He was the son of the late McKinley and Martha Dutton Smith. Mr. Smith retired from the United States Army after serving in World War II, Korean War, and the Vietnam War. He retired from the Wise County Technical School, where he was a welding instructor. His wife, Edith Faye, son, Bobby Earl and granddaughter Jessica Nichole Albrecht preceded him in death. Also, preceding him in death were brothers, Jack Smith and Billy Mac Smith and sisters Iretta Mullins and Ann Sutherland. Survivors include three daughters and one son, Thea Hersey (Dan) of Norton, Virginia, Karen Pilato (Tony) of Danville, Virginia, Rene Albrecht (John) of Enterprise Alabama, and son, James Smith (Lena) of Norton, Virginia. Other survivors include three grandchildren, Cassandra Pierce of Norton, Virginia, Melissa Hernandez of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and Jennifer Collins (Tory) of Pound, Virginia; two great-granddaughters, Mikayla Galbraith and Emily Collins; two brothers Lawrence Smith and Chester Smith, sister-in-law Susie Smith and brother-in-law Lee Sutherland plus numerous nieces and nephews.
