Obituary

Hiram Eugene Jackson (Jack) Rose was born June 15, 1928, the son of John C. and Lectie Kiser Rose at Wolf Pit, Kentucky. Jack was named for his grandfather, Hiram Rose. Mr. Rose served on the District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Force, where he won many awards for his service, including the Bronze Star for Distinguished Service. He is recognized as a civic and community leader in Dickenson Virginia; he was among the most active participants who were able to bring the Donkenny plant to the Haysi area, he was a leader in the effort to establish a prison at Red Onion Mountain, and is credited with having begun the effort which resulted in a modern hospital being opened in Dickenson County in 1986. Jack served as Administrative Assistant to the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors from 1980 until 1983, and served on the Cumberland Plateau Planning District Commission Board of Directors, the Community Corrections Resources Board and Vice-Chairman of the Dickenson County Economic Development Commission. In 1994, H. Jack Rose was appointed by Governor George Allen to serve on the Virginia State Board of Prisons. Early in 1997 the prison board recommended that Jack's hard work in securing the Red Onion Prison be recognized by naming the road leading to the prison for Jack, The H. Jack Rose Highway. Preceding Mr. Rose in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John C. Rose and two brothers, Delbert and James Carson Rose. Survivors include his wife, Lilly Texas Rose of Coeburn; two sons, Robroy Rose and wife Angela of Fredrick, Maryland, and Albert Clay Rose and wife Barbara of Locust Grove, Virginia; one daughter, Elizabeth Dillard and husband Michael of Atlanta, Georgia; two sisters, Virgie Beauchaump of Knox, Indiana and Ava Nell Blevins of Coeburn; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Receiving of friends will be 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 25th, with funeral services conducted by Elder A.L. Yates at 7:00 pm in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel. Family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home at 1:30 pm on Sunday, August 26th, to proceed to the Phipps Memorial Cemetery for graveside services. Pallbearers will be grandsons, William J. Rose, Robert C. Rose, Curtis N. Rose, Kyle S. Rose, Travis Dillard and Carl Rasnick. Honorary pallbearers are Luther Rose, Larry Rose, Olen Rose, Jerry Stanley and the third floor staff of Mountain View. In lieu of flowers, the family request contributions be made to the Dickenson County Home Health and Hospice Agency or the Southwest Cancer Center in Norton, Virginia.
