Harold J. Smith, age 84, passed away Sunday, June 1st, 2014 at his residence. Mr. Smith was a lifelong resident of Clintwood, a veteran of the US Army, having served in Japan, and a retired coal miner from Har&Lee Coal Company. He was a beloved father and grandfather. Mr. Smith loved the outdoors, fox hunting and fishing. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Lucian and Theda Smith, wife, Marie Smith, granddaughter, Samantha Hamilton,and two brothers, Michael and Paul Smith. Survivors include two sons, Randy Smith and wife Connie and Charles Smith all of Clintwood; two daughters, Patricia Carty, Diane Hamilton and husband Donnie all of Clintwood; two sisters, Lorraine Anderson of Baltimore, Maryland and Sandra Mullins of Clintwood; six grandchildren, Ella Smith, Sally Lyall, Jessica Smith, Brittany O'Quinn, Tyler Hamilton, and Josh Hamilton; three great-grandchildren, Grayson "Scooter" O'Quinn, Sadie Lyall, and Alexa O'Quinn. The family wishes to send a special thank you to Crystal Stanley from Home Nursing Company, Darrell Dotson, Clyde Hill, and Elliott O'Quinn. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 4th at 7:00 pm in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Mike Yates officiating. Visitation will begin at 6:00 pm. Family and friends are requested to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 am on Thursday, June 5th, to proceed to Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia for graveside services at 11:00 am. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are former co-workers, Darrell Dotson, Bobby Hammons, Andy Silcox, Neal Stanley, Eddie Rose and Robbie Hay. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center, 671 Highway 58E, Norton, Virginia, 24273.
