Obituary

Harold Burns Phipps age 91, of Clintwood passed away on December 18, 2021. He was a veteran of the United States Army and served his country from February 9, 1951 until January 29, 1953. He was stationed in Germany during the Korean War, serving as a medic. He was a private first class at the time of his discharge. Harold played baseball for the Bear Pen Dirty Socks in 1947 as a pitcher and short stop. The team was invited to Wichita, Kansas to participate in the National semi-pro playoff series.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Fannie Phipps; wife, Sue Phipps; daughter, Roxann Stout; granddaughter, Stephanie Phipps; brother, Darold Phipps and sister, Virginia Mullins.

Survivors include three sons, Steven Phipps and Marie of Clintwood, Michael Phipps and Dorothy of Abingdon, Virginia and Wesley Phipps of Johnson City, Tennessee; his brother, Donald Phipps and Vivian of Clintwood; one sister, Millie Willis of Abingdon; granddaughters, Julie Williams, Sarah Large, Amy Henderson and Ashley Phipps; grandsons, Tommy Fannon and Steven D. Phipps;granddaughter Morgan Phipps; 11 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 8 th , 1 pm at W.L. Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel, Clintwood with John Farmer officiating.
