Glenda
Short
Nov 8, 1939 — Dec 1, 2021
Glenda Sharon (Stout) Smith Short was born on November 8, 1939 in Pike County, Kentucky to Delores Madeline Stout and Floyd Monroe Bumgardner, Jr. Following the death of her mother in 1948, she moved to Dickenson County, Virginia to live with her maternal aunt and uncle, Laverne and Everette Smith, in Snowball Hollow. Glenda loved Snowball Hollow and remained near it for the remainder of her life. She obtained her beautician license in the late 1950's and eventually opened her own beauty shop, Laurel Leaf Beauty Shop, on Longs Fork. She continued to operate her shop until her retirement in 1971. She married Richman Short on September 6, 1961. They had four daughters and one son. She passed away on December 1, 2021 at Lonesome Pine Regional Hospital after a brief hospital stay. She courageously battled Stage 4 Melanoma for approximately 4 years prior to her death.
She was preceded in death by her biological and adopted parents; in-laws Burl and Amy Short; brother Eugene Smith; sister Carolyn Cantrell; sisters-in-law Jessie Johnson, Janice dela Cruz and Dinah Short; brothers-in-law Ernie dela Cruz and Danny Greear; her beloved first born daughter Kimberly Paige Short; and grandchild Baby Shaver.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years Richman D. Short; daughters Martha Short, Cynthia Short and Sharon Shaver (Terry); son Joshua Evans (Jillian); and the lights of her life her grandchildren: Tiara Shaver, Wyatt Shaver, Morgan Shaver, Alivia Evans and Anistyn Evans all of Clintwood, Virginia. She is also survived by her brothers Don Smith (Delores); Dale Smith (Wilma); Bennie Smith (Verna) all of Clintwood, Virginia; Roger Douglas (Mary) Fort Wayne, Indiana and George Bumgardner, Indiana; and her sisters Wilma Jessee (Marvin), Abingdon, Virginia; Sheila Frederick, Indiana and Virginia Gunter, Indiana; sister-in law Louella Greear, Gray Tennessee; a host of nieces and nephews and two special great-nieces Samantha Smith, Charlottesville, Virginia and Kristin Smith, Clintwood, Virginia; and special friends Martha Stanley, Judy Mullins and Shelbie Willis all of Clintwood, Virginia.
Glenda loved her family. She loved to cook and took pride in feeding everyone she knew. She was an accomplished quilter, crafter, and gardener and loved growing flowers and preserving garden goods. She was a "red hot Republican" and supported the local party with fundraising and hauling voters for many years. Glenda was a charter member of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the leader of Girl Scout Troop 309 for eight years, Camp Fire Inc. for four years and volunteered with Girl Scout Troop 140 for the past nine years. Glenda was a fixture at Longs Fork Elementary School having her "children" almost continuously in the school from 1967, when the school opened, until 2008, where over the years she became known as "Mamaw" to hundreds of children providing cupcakes and watermelon for countless events. Glenda loved education and instilled the values of hard work and education into her children. She attended Clintwood High School and obtained her GED. She was very proud to have all five of her children graduate high school and obtain college degrees. Three of her children graduated with perfect attendance for all 12 years of primary and secondary schooling. Three of her children went on to graduate with Juris Doctorate degrees and one with a Master's Degree in Counseling. Her parenting style can best be described as an iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove. Her values of hard work and education will forever be embedded into her family and community.
The family will receive family and friends on Sunday Dec. 5, from 12:00 noon till 2:00 PM at the Clintwood-Colley Funeral Home Chapel to be followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM conducted by her nephew Donald Smith and life-long friend Mike Yates. Graveside services will follow the funeral with burial at the Short/Swindall Cemetery in Osborne's Gap, Virginia. Friends and family will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Dickenson County Republican Party and the Dixon family of Snowball Hollow.
The family would like to thank the Southwest Virginia Cancer Center for the care they provided Glenda during her battle with melanoma.
