Obituary

It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of my dear husband Frederick Joseph Boyd.

Freddy passed away on January 19th, 2026 at his home, surrounded by his loved ones.

Freddy was born on March 4, 1953 in Grundy Virginia, the seventh son of Tivis Simmie Boyd and Estelle Deel Boyd.  He was always so proud to let everyone he met know that he was the seventh son.

Freddy spent most of his life in the state of Virginia with a short time spent in Baltimore, Maryland.

Freddy loved to make people laugh and enjoyed life by joking and carrying on.  He felt laughter was good for the soul. At family gatherings he could be found playing with his grandchildren and full of joy.  Anywhere he went he found someone to joke with or share wisdom with. He didn't meet a stranger.

Freddy attended Raines elementary school at Russell prater before moving to Baltimore Maryland, later moving back to Virginia.

Freddy achieved his GED and attended southwest Virginia community college and received his certification in welding.

He was a jack of all trades and could pretty much do anything.  He was a hard worker, providing for his family.   He worked in the coal mines and he was a carpenter and a certified in welder and mechanic. He worked for Dickenson County landfill, Ramey enterprises with Delmon Ramey, Mar-don incorporated, Cooper Logging with William and Dwayne Cooper and at Johnson Chevrolet in Clintwood.

He would do anything to help a friend or neighbor.

Freddy gave his life to the Lord on March 11, 1974  and shortly afterwards answered his call to preach.

Freddy was a child of God, a loving son, brother, husband, father and papaw.  He was a pastor, friend and preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He loved and cared for his family.

Freddy was a member of Fleming town freewill Baptist church. Freddy served as pastor at several churches including pastoring tarpon freewill Baptist church, Boyd Ratliff methodist church, lighthouse freewill Baptist church and also had a radio ministry.  He belonged to the freewill Baptist john Thomas association and served on the ordaining committee.  Freddy also performed many marriage ceremonies.

Freddy also shared his ministry in song at one time being the Boyd trio and Duane with his wife Monica, his mother-in-law Minnie Wolford, young daughter Meagan, and Duane Deel.  Freddy and Monica shared their faith by singing at different churches and funerals for over fifty years; starting this ministry even before they were married.

He loved playing his guitar and going to different places to share his ministry.  At the end of his ministry his down syndrome son (Trevor) would get up and sing with him and Monica after the death of his Mamaw with tears falling down his face.   He loved discussing the bible with his daughter who he often told everyone was well beyond her years in the knowledge of the word.

He loved his son-in-law like his own son and was proud of him and often told him so.  He was so very proud of his grandchildren and loved them with all of his heart.  He was famous for his egg sandwiches with his daughter and grandchildren.

Freddy was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers, Billy Eugene, Harold Lloyd, Roger Eulis, Phillip Ray, Tivis Benford (Midge) and Tony Lee. Also preceding him in death was his father and mother-in-law Talt and Minnie Wolford.

Survivors include: his wife Monica Lynn Wolford Boyd of fifty years of Clinchco, VA,  daughter Meagan Lynelle Boyd Hicks and son-in-law Travis Hicks of Hazard Kentucky and one son Trevor Joseph Boyd of the home, one grandson Eilam Joseph and two granddaughters Elliana Gracelyn and Esther Maelyn of Hazard, Kentucky, his sister and last surviving sibling of this generation Deborah Lynn Boyd Bowman and her husband Danny Lee Bowman whom he loved as a brother, of Richlands, VA.  He was also survived by several special nieces and nephews and a host of cousins and friends also survive.

As Freddy sang, the old man is dead.

But the new man is now home with Jesus.

One of Freddy's favorite verses.

"For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Romans 8:38-39
