Ferne Hillman Shortt age 95 passed away Saturday April 4, 2009 at the Norton Community Hospital, Norton, VA. She was born December 18, 1913 in Nickelsville, VA and her family moved to Clintwood in the fall of 1914. She was the daughter of the late F.C. and Susan Davidson Hillman. She is preceded in death by her husband John E. Shortt; three brothers, Conley, Orion and Fred Hillman, along with one sister Bonnie Hillman Bond. She had resided in Clintwood most of her life where she taught elementary school with the Dickenson County School system for 39 years. She was a caring and dedicated teacher who loved her profession. She was active with the Clintwood United Methodist Church, The Order of the Eastern Star and enjoyed bus tours with her friends prior to her decline in health. She is survived by her two sons; Ronald E. Shortt and Danny H. Shortt both of Clintwood, along with several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Ferne Hillman Shortt will be conducted at 11:00 AM Tuesday April 7, 2009 at the Clintwood United Methodist Church with Dr. John Price officiating. Burial will follow at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery Main Street Clintwood. Pallbearers will be Harry Burton Clark, Patrick Clark, Ryan Clark, Bill Deel, Johnny Skeen, Tim Carty, Jamie Whitt and Duster Fleming. Honorary Pallbearers will be Frank Anderson, John Kyle Branham, Glen Cole, Jonah Cox, John Dotson, Harold Jackson, Ronnie Robbins, David Robbins, Darrell Silcox, Ivory Steffey, Ben Sutherland and Kelly Sutherland. The family will receive friends after 6:00 Monday evening at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with visitation from 6-8 PM.
