Obituary

SGM Ret. Elster Stanley age 87, passed away Saturday March 24, 2018 at his home. Mr. Stanley was born in Dickenson County. He entered the United States Army in 1951, serving until 1978.  During that time, he served in several countries, with combat tours in Korea and Vietnam, where he received the bronze star for valor.  He was a retiree from the Second Armor Division.  Mr. Stanley helped with the opening of the Dickenson County Medical Center, where he worked until he retired a second time.  He served as a board member with the Clintwood Rescue Squad, Chairman of the Dickenson County Board of Supervisors, Commissioner of Breaks Interstate Park, and served with the Cumberland Plateau Planning District, Mr. Stanley was a member of VFW 8979 and American Legion.

Mr. Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Logan and Oakley Stanley and one brother, Kelsie Stanley.

Survivors include his wife Bonnie Killen Stanley of Clintwood; son, Gregory Alan Stanley and wife Elizabeth of Clintwood; two granddaughters, Heather Elena and Rebecca Marie Stanley; his sister, Betty Sauls of Clintwood; several nieces, nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, March 28th in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel beginning at 6 PM, with a service to follow at 7 PM.  Funeral services will be conducted at the funeral home, Thursday, March 29th, 1 PM with Frank Hall officiating.  Burial will follow in the Elster and Bonnie Stanley Cemetery, Ramey Flatts Road.   Full military honors by the United States Army National Guard Honors Team.
