Obituary

Dr. Kurtz Alderman age 89, passed Tuesday, January 15, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.  Dr. Alderman was born in Floyd County, Virginia and was a Veteran of the United States Army.  He was a graduate of Bridgewater College and the University of Virginia Medical School, where he met the love of his life, his wife of sixty- three years, Carol Walters. Through the Rural Medicine Scholarship, he came to Clintwood in 1959.  Dr. Alderman was Medical Director of the Dickenson Clinic from 1959 until 2000 and had been the Dickenson County Medical Examiner since 1963.  He served as Lt. Governor of Kiwanis and was president of the Clintwood Kiwanis.  Dr. Alderman was team doctor for the Clintwood Greenwave Football Program for forty-five years.  He was a member of the Clintwood United Methodist Church.

Dr. Alderman was preceded in death by his parents, Simon B. and Effie Alderman.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Carol Walters Alderman of Clintwood; 3 daughters Janet Hurley and husband Mike of Madison, Alabama, Susan Yates and husband Jeff of Clintwood, and Jo Greenberg and husband Mitch of Columbia, Maryland; 1 brother, Bob Alderman and wife Marie of Blacksburg, Virginia; 1 sister, Donna Whitener of Cary, North Carolina; 6 grandchildren, Nathan Yates, Megan March and husband Zach, Samantha Hurley, Casey Greenberg, Jessica Greenberg and Sydney Greenberg.

Funeral services will be conducted Friday, January 18 th , at 7 PM in the Clintwood United Methodist Church with John McCord officiating.  Family will receive friends beginning at 5 PM.  Pallbearers will be Kevin Mullins, Doug Mullins, Kenneth Hill, Coach Rick Mullins, Ron Kendrick and Coach Bob Meade.  Honorary pallbearers are Dr. Lurton Lyle, Kiwanis members, David Davis, Joann Deel, Rebecca Woods, John Blanton and Larry Greear.  Burial will follow at a later date in the Phipps Memorial Cemetery.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Clintwood United Methodist Church or Clintwood Rescue Squad.
