Obituary

Dora Selina ( Mullins ) Browning was born to Creed Mullins and Grace Lucille ( Meade ) Mullins on April 6, 1935. She grew up with five rambunctious brothers, whom she loved dearly, on an isolated mountain farm where they had no electricity or indoor plumbing for the first 16 years of her life. This gave her tender, loving heart a toughness that would be revealed many times throughout the course of her life to its final days. She married Walter Lee Browning on June 25, 1951 and resided with him for 60 years until her death on September 27, 2011. Although perhaps joking that she only married him to have electricity and running water, they stuck together by the grace of God through thick and thin to become the parents of three sons: Gary, Larry, and Wayne ( just what she needed after 5 brothers...more boys! ). Although Gary died only two weeks after birth, she raised Larry and Wayne with love, pride, and strictness to earn from them an endless respect and love. She worked hard throughout life, loved to read books, and was a faithful fan of the New York Knicks and Boston Red Sox, showing her own boisterous nature when they both won and lost. She returned to school and was awarded her General Education Diploma on April 2, 1987 at the age of 52. With high praise for her excellent grades she enrolled in college where she continued to rank at the top of her class. From her youngest days tending to feisty brothers, nieces, and nephews to later years caring for many in both the Mullins and Browning families it was only natural that she earned acceptance into the RN Program at Mountain Empire Community College. With a jolly, nurturing heart she was the ultimate care giver. With pride her son Wayne recalls that Dr. Jim Strength told him that, "your Mother is a better student than you are," as she worked through the often dreaded Anatomy & Physiology to earn the respect and friendship of many of her MUCH younger classmates. While never getting to realize her dream due to multiple heart attacks and the development of many tough diseases, she kept a golden soul that even the most harsh and terrible form of Alzheimer's could not fully destroy. Dora is survived by her husband Walter Lee Browning, her son Larry & wife Veronica Browning and their son Willie Lee Browning, her son Wayne Browning, her youngest brother Lloyd Mullins, and many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dickenson County Home Health and Dr. N.C. Ratliffe for their assistance.
