Obituary

Darold Lloyd Phipps, age 74, passed away Saturday, July 14, 2012 at his residence. Mr. Phipps was a life long resident of Dickenson County and a retiree of Clinchfield Coal Company. He served as Recording Secretary of UMWA Local 2490 and was founder and president of Mountain People and Places. He was a member of Hill Ridge Freewill Baptist Church and was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Phipps was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Fannie Phipps. Survivors include his wife Scharlene Rose Phipps of Clintwood; one son, Clifton Darold Phipps and wife Lorie of Clintwood; one daughter, Diana Smith and husband Terry of Clintwood and foster daughter Margie Hughes Mullins and husband Royce of Pound. Other survivors are two brothers Harold B. and Donald Phipps of Clintwood; two sisters, Millie Willis of Abingdon, Virginia and Virginia Mullins of Christiansburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Camron Darold Phipps, Lorin Faith Phipps, Evan Isaiah Smith, Ethan Elijah Smith, Aaron Mullins, Ryan Mullins and Amy Sykes; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 17, 2012, 11:00 a.m. in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel with Keith Dotson officiating. Burial will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery on Rose Ridge with grandchildren and nephews serving as pallbearers. Family will receive friends Monday, July 16, 2012, after 6:00 p.m. in the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel, where a song service will begin at 7:00 p.m.
