Obituary

Curtis Hill formerly of Clintwood, Virginia passed away in Detroit, Michigan on Sunday March 31, 2013. Survivors include his children Sandra, Curtis Jr, Sharon and Ricky; Ricky's wife Sarah; grandchildren Stephen, Connor and Madison; sisters Frances Hill and Muriel Howell. Curt was preceded in death by his parents Ivel Glen (Kegg) Hill and Edna Mae Sykes Hill; brothers Jackie, James and Hughey; sisters Gaynell Gore and Lucille Messer. Funeral services with military honors will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Clintwood Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at the Rose Ridge Cemetery. Curtis Lee Hill was born and raised on Rose Ridge. Curt graduated from Ervinton High School and enlisted in the United States Army. After basic training, Curt served in an Airborne division before being stationed in Germany where he was a tank mechanic. After suffering a serious injury, Curt was honorably discharged and returned home to Clintwood. Curt soon moved to Detroit MI to pursue a career in mechanics. Curt was a lifelong mechanic and loved archery, hunting and fishing as well as reading westerns and riding his bike. Curt raised his family and lived out the majority of his life in Detroit but quite often went "down home" to visit family and friends and all that knew him knew that part of him never did leave that ridge. Curt returned to Clintwood in 1998 to care for his ailing mother until she passed in 2004. Curt received a heart transplant in 2000 and after rehabilitating, went on to thrive in Clintwood, working at Dominion Health and Fitness and reconnecting with friends and family while caring for his mother in the family home. After his health began to fail, Curt moved back to Detroit in 2007 where he was warmly welcomed into the home of his son Ricky, daughter in law Sarah and his grandson Connor. With his granddaughter Madison being born in 2009, Curt lived out the last 6 years of his life surrounded by the unconditional love of his family and was able to watch all of his grandchildren grow. Curt was able to see his son Chip, grandson Stephen and daughters Sandy and Sharon more by being in MI but, even in the end, part of him wanted to sit on the porch on Rose Ridge in his last days.
