Obituary

Charles Haskel Lambert, 91, died peacefully at Mountain View Hospital in Norton, Virginia, on May 2, 2015. He was born on January 10, 1924, at Tenso, Virginia to Charles Columbus "Charlie" Lambert and Zella Smith Lambert. After graduating from Clinchco High School, Haskel enrolled in the Dallas Aviation School to train to be an airplane mechanic. While he was a student, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. After graduation, he and other students were hired by the school to teach the Army Air Corp to fly planes. Later he decided to join the Navy. When basic was completed, he was transported by barge from Boston to California by way of the Panama Canal. From there he was stationed on a barracks/supply barge and went to the Pacific where he was on the coast of the Philippines for two years and in China for six months. After the war he came back to Dickenson County and met and married Lietta Vanover Lambert in 1946. They were married for 56 years. Besides his parents and wife, others who have gone before him are a sister Lois Marie Lambert (infant), a sister Betty Joyce Lambert, a brother W.C. Lambert and a sister Elene Lambert Stanley. Those left to cherish his memory are a sister Willetta Lambert Suttle, Marietta, Georgia; a daughter Judy Lambert Lockhart and her husband Fred of Martinsville, VA; a son Danny W. Lambert and his wife Myra Meade Lambert of Clintwood, VA; a grandson Todd M. Lockhart of Bassett, VA; a granddaughter Natasha Lambert Moore and her husband David of Clintwood, VA; two great granddaughters, Rian Moore and Jordan Moore of Clintwood, VA and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Haskel lived in Clintwood for 68 years. He was a coal miner; co-owner of New Hardware and Furniture Company of Clintwood and St. Paul, VA; co-owner of Clintwood Funeral Home, Clintwood, VA. He was co-owner of McClure River Coal Company and retired from there in the 1980s. After retirement he enjoyed raising a garden and going to Hardee's to meet his buddies for breakfast and friendship. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 6, 2015 from 5:00-7:00 pm at Clintwood Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 7:00 pm with Bill Kendrick and Joe Glenn Sluss officiating. Burial and graveside service will be on Thursday, May 7, 2015 at 11:00 am at the Lambert Family Cemetery on Hatchet Mountain in Nora, VA. Family and friends are requested to meet at Clintwood Funeral Home at 10:30 am to proceed to the cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. A special thank you to Clintwood Colley Funeral home for their help and kindness to the family during this time. Also special thanks to Paytria Bolling, his home health care worker, whom he liked so much. And thank you to all nurses and staff of Mountain View Hospital who took such good care of him while he was sick.
