Catherine Allen Sutherland Gilbert, age 89, passed away July 14th, 2009 after a long illness. Mrs. Gilbert was the daughter of the late Simpson Holliday Sutherland and Pearl Rush Sutherland. Mrs. Gilbert attended public schools in Dickenson County and was a graduate of Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. She did post-graduate studies at Radford University. Mrs. Gilbert was a long-time member of the high school faculty at both Ervinton High School and Clintwood High School, and later became School Librarian at Clintwood High School. Mrs. Gilbert was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joseph Cooney Gilbert, as well as brothers Jasper R. Sutherland and wife Rubye, Dr. John M. Sutherland and her sister Josephine S. Carico and husband James W. Carico. She is survived by three brothers, Benjamin F. Sutherland of Clintwood, Virginia, William L. and wife, Virginia Sutherland, of Abingdon, Virginia, Fred G. and wife Ardith Sutherland of Sandston, Virginia; two sisters, Louise Sutherland of Clintwood, Virginia and Jane S. Lyon of Richmond, Virginia , along with numerous nieces and nephews. Also surviving her is her Aunt Rose Allen Rush of Clintwood, Virginia. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 17th at Clintwood United Methodist Church, with burial following the service in the family plot at Phipps Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Clintwood-Colley Funeral Home on McClure Avenue from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 16th, 2009.
