Obituary

Beatrice Clay Stanley, 92, on July 14th, finished her time on earth at 3:50 AM at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital, Kingsport. The beloved mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and educator lived to serve. Born on a Caney Ridge farm to Linda and Leonard Clay, she was near the oldest of 12 children, and the daughter who remained at home to care for ailing mother and siblings. She met the love of her life, J. R. (Rad) Stanley and together they beget Ann and John. Her parents, despite the Depression where determined that their children be educated, which led to the development of an ingenious bartering arrangement that allowed 8 of their children, including Bea, to attend Hiwassee College. Beatrice then graduated from Emory and Henry College, and began her long career as an educator. She and Rad moved briefly to Missouri, where both children were born. After a short stint in Florida, they returned to Dickenson County, and lived out her days, teaching math and serving as guidance counselor at Clintwood High till retirement in 1975. While raising her children in Darwin, near Clintwood, she helped nurture her husband's fledging Stanley's General Store. She and Rad were devoted to family, and remained close to all their siblings, particularly Bea's sister, Lura, who, along with husband, Lawrence Kiser, raised their children--Linda, Harriette, and Kay-- next door . Those five children shared everything, including a common play yard.. Relatives were always welcome at Bea and Rad's home. Nephew Clyde Mullins, and niece Lucille Mullins (now Southerlin) lived with them for a time. They tried to help any relative in need, and were especially involved in the final years of both sets of parents, with Bea's mother dying in their Darwin home, and Bea's father living with them till he re-married. In 1960, they began, along with Bea's brother, Arnold, Modern Hardware and Furniture in Clintwood. In 1970, they sold their Darwin business to Glen Stanley, who they loved like a son. In 1971, they built their present home, in Clintwood. Family, church, community, and busness remained central to their lives. John provided loving granddaughter, Jill, who now, along with husband, Ken, continues the family business.. Daugher Ann, retired teacher, preceded Bea in death by 6 months. Ann's husband, Danny and sons, Joey and John Daniel, as well as Jill's son, Ethan, remained close to Bea's heart. In late 1997, both Rad and Bea became sufficiently infirmed to require constant care. Wonderful caregivers have helped son, John, provide comfort.. Rad passed away in 2003, and now Bea has joined him in heaven. Survivors include son, John Clay Stanley, Clintwood; granddaughter Jill Mullins and husband, Ken, of Pound; son-in-law Danny Hopkins, Collinsville, VA; grandsons Joey and John Daniel Hopkins; great grandson, Ethan Henley Mullins; sisters Lura Kiser, Clintwood, Virgia Boggs, Pound, brothers, Leonard Clay, Jr. and wife Helen, Piney Flats, TN, Leo Clay and wife Shirley, Clarksville, TN, and Ed Clay and wife Virginia, Atlanta, GA; several other special nieces and nephews also survive. It also feels great love for all the caregivers who have helped, especially Shirlene Mullins, Irene Powers, Reese Ratliff, Evajean Webb, and Kathy Phillips who was holding Bea's hand as she peacefully slipped away.
