Alma Hughes Davis of Clintwood, Virginia passed away peacefully at Heritage Hall on November 7, 2011. Alma was born on August 14, 1914 and was a lifelong resident of Dickenson County. She was a member of the Clintwood Baptist Church and a retiree from the Dickenson County School System. Alma cherished the mountains and the life and culture of her community. She was blessed with friendships that began in her childhood and lasted through life. Alma was a gifted quilter and gardener and loved the outdoors. She traveled extensively throughout the United States with friends and family and enjoyed learning about different cultures. It was important to Alma that her children and grandchildren know their heritage and appreciate the life and customs of their ancestors. With oral histories and extensive research she published the Hughes Genealogy in 1993. Alma was preceded in death by her parents, Ballard and Lissie Hughes, husband Virgil Davis, brothers Delmar Hughes and Reverend Elmer Hughes and one sister, Lillian Fleming. She is survived by her loving daughters, Marzetta Fleming and husband Buddy Ray, Judy Baker and husband Eddie, all of Clintwood, Virginia; one brother, Charles Hughes, Jr., and wife Ann of Pound, Virginia; cherished grandchildren, Tammy Michelle Fleming of Nashville, Tennessee, Grady Baker and wife Lori of Roanoke, Virginia, Brady Baker of Atlanta, Georgia and Dr. Lisa Webster and husband Bo of Blacksburg, Virginia; beloved great grandchildren, Connor and Lauren Baker of Roanoke, Virginia and Rebecca, Amelia and Reid Webster of Blacksburg, Virginia; she also leaves behind treasured nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive visitors at the Clintwood Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, November 11, from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm. Funeral services will begin at 1:00 pm. Burial will follow at the Phipps Memorial Cemetery with Grady Baker, Brady Baker, Don Bradley, David Davis, Doug Fleming, Freddie Robinson, Connor Baker and Bo Webster serving as pallbearers. The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Heritage Hall, the patients, and her friends who visited her.
