Obituary

Alma Sybil Swindall Davis, age 98, died on March 28, 2008 in Wytheville, Virginia. She was a resident of Dickenson County most of her life. Alma was preceded in death by her parents Mahlon Roberts and Nancy Elizabeth "Liz" Moore Swindall, brothers Russell, Hobart, Wesley, Jim and sisters Alice, Mattie, Esta, Draxie, Flora, Dorothy, and Pauline, special nieces Julie Owens and Pearl Willis. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Lacy Ellis Davis, an infant son Lacy Ellis, Jr., son Larry Niles Davis and granddaughter Melinda Liz Stanley Dotson. She is survived by sons Garland (Shirley) of Abingdon, David (Pat) of Clintwood, daughters Kaye Chase (Charlie Bill) of Wytheville and Sheila Hensley (Cecil) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Alma was born in Osborne Gap, Virginia on March 10, 1910. She spent her younger years in Rocky Hollow near Jenkins, Kentucky. She was a member of the girls basketball team and played in several championship games traveling to nearby Kentucky and Virginia schools. She was a graduate of Pikeville College in 1929 and taught school in Kentucky for two years prior to her marriage to Lacy. The couple owned and operated general stores from the 1930s through the 1950s. They made their home initially on Camp Creek, then Georges Fork and eventually in the town of Clintwood. Alma was an avid reader, gardener, and an expert seamstress. She enjoyed family, home demonstration clubwork and being with her family and numerous friends. Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons. Services will be conducted by Kenneth Childress. Family will receive friends after 6 PM on Sunday, March 30 with services beginning at 7 PM at Clintwood Colley Funeral Home. Interment will be at the Garland B. Davis Family Cemetery on Camp Creek at 11 AM Monday, March 31.
