Ireland Alger Baker, 93 passed away peacefully on Tuesday August 7, 2012 at Pheasant Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Roanoke, Virginia. A native of Dickenson County, Mr. Baker was retired from Clinchfield Coal Company as a diesel mechanic and was a member of UMWA Local 2274. He served in the US Army and was a veteran of World War II. Always giving of his time to the community, he served as a volunteer fireman, a member of the Clintwood Town Council and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No.66 and the Lions Club. He was an avid gardener, fisherman and woodworker whose love and dedication to his family and friends will never be forgotten. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Delphia, brother, Robert "Bob" Baker, sister Janna Vee Mathis and one grandson, George Joseph Tackett. Survivors include one son, James (Rita) Baker of Clintwood, Va., two daughters, Betty Baker of Clintwood, Va., and Anna Tackett of Roanoke, Va. Also surviving are three grandchildren including Hollie Baker of Clintwood, Va., Kristin Tackett of Richmond, Va. Jerrod Tackett of Roanoke, Va., a sister Marie Fitzpatrick of Abingdon, Va., and several nieces and nephews. Special friends are Quintin and June Brown as well as Becky Hackney. Mr. Baker was cared for by two special people, Greg and Cathy Dotson. In recent months he was blessed with wonderful caretakers at Pheasant Ridge including Omar Haskins, Tasha Crump and Ashley Wade. Alger married Delphia Turner the love of his life on June 5, 1945. They shared sixty-four wonderful years raising three children and were so proud of their three grandchildren. Memories from the children include a hard working father who was always ready to listen and offer advice. The grandchildren will remember a loving grandfather who spent many hours teaching them how to fish and sharing his love of gardening. His stories and wisdom of his life experiences are things they will always treasure and use to guide their lives. His friends will remember a kind and generous man who delighted them with his company and sharing the hard work from his garden. This gentle loving man will be missed but never forgotten. The funeral will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, August 12, 2012 at Clintwood Colley Funeral Home in Clintwood with Pastor Bryant Owens and Pastor Lynn Vanover officiating. Interment will follow with full military honors in the Phipps Cemetery in Clintwood. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held Saturday, August 11 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Clintwood Colley Funeral Home who will handle all arrangements.
